SYNOPSIS

Your Attention Please explores the profound impact social media is having on young people, families and society – and asks what we can do about it.

Through families directly affected by social media, campaigners, whistleblowers and leading thinkers, the documentary investigates how platforms designed to capture our attention are reshaping childhood, relationships and mental wellbeing.

Featuring Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen, former US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, Tristan Harris, Sherry Turkle and Cal Newport, the film goes beyond identifying the problem to explore possible solutions. These include ReThink, technology designed to combat cyberbullying, and Amsterdam’s Offline Club, part of a growing movement encouraging people to put down their phones and reconnect in person.

Timely, accessible and ultimately hopeful, Your Attention Please asks whether we can take back control of our attention – before the platforms take even more of it.

Sara Robin - Director

When I began making Your Attention Please, I wanted to understand what the attention economy was doing to us , especially to young people growing up with technology designed to keep them constantly engaged.

I wanted to balance the growing scientific evidence with the experiences of real families living with the consequences. But I didn't want simply to sound the alarm. We also found parents, young people, educators and technologists actively challenging the system and developing alternatives.

Ultimately, the film is about reclaiming our attention, our relationships and our ability to connect with one another. The scale of the problem is daunting, but the people we met gave me genuine hope that change is possible.
